Stop Chasing Passive Income. Here's What Actually Works.

By Aurobinda Mondal

Read time: 12 minutes

Last week, we established something critical: the problem isn’t your current employer—it’s employment itself. Better jobs are just better cages. The real shift is from employee to owner, from permission-based work to income you control.

So naturally, you did what everyone does when they reach this realization:

You Googled “how to make passive income.”

And you found:

  • Dropshipping courses ($997)

  • Real estate investing masterclasses ($2,497)

  • “Build a course empire” programs ($4,997)

  • Affiliate marketing blueprints ($497)

  • Print-on-demand strategies (free, but upsells everywhere)

Every single one promises the same thing:

“Build wealth while you sleep. Make money without trading time. Earn passive income with minimal effort.”

Here’s what none of them tell you:

Passive income is a lie.

Not in the sense that automated income doesn’t exist—it does. But in the sense that the version being sold to you is designed to keep you buying courses, not building income.

Let me show you why.

The Passive Income Illusion

Here’s the typical pitch:

“I make $50,000 a month in passive income. I work 4 hours a week. You can do this too. Just buy my course.”

Let’s break down what’s actually happening:

Claim: “I make $50K/month passively”

Reality: They make $50K/month selling courses about how to make passive income. The income isn’t passive—it’s from course sales. And course sales require constant marketing, content creation, funnel optimization, email sequences, webinars, and social media presence.

That’s not passive. That’s a full-time business.

Claim: “I only work 4 hours a week”

Reality: They work 40+ hours a week, but they’ve redefined “work” to exclude anything they enjoy. Content creation? That’s “fun, not work.” Email marketing? “Just engaging with my community.” Sales calls? “Serving my audience.”

When you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work. But it’s still an effort. It’s still time. It’s still labor.

Claim: “You can do this too.”

Reality: You can—if you already have:

  • An audience (built over 2-5 years)

  • A personal brand (hundreds of hours of content)

  • Email list (10,000+ subscribers minimum)

  • Proven expertise (that people will pay to learn)

  • Capital to invest in tools, ads, and infrastructure

The course conveniently skips the part where they built all of that before the “passive” income started.

Why Passive Income Advice Keeps You Broke

Here’s the actual pattern:

Step 1: You buy a course on passive income ($997)

Step 2: The course tells you to:

  • Build an audience (6-12 months, no income)

  • Create a product (2-3 months, no income)

  • Set up funnels and automation (1-2 months, costs money)

  • Run ads to drive traffic (ongoing cost, no guaranteed return)

Step 3: After 12-18 months of effort and $3,000-$5,000 in expenses, you’ve made $847.

Step 4: You conclude you “didn’t execute well enough” and buy another course.

The cycle repeats.

Meanwhile, the course creator made $997 from you (and 10,000 other people = $9.97M).

Their passive income is your active spending.

Here’s why this model fails for most people:

1. It requires massive upfront time with no guaranteed return

You’re being told to:

  • Spend 12-18 months building an audience

  • Create content consistently (hundreds of hours)

  • Build products speculatively (before you know if anyone will buy)

All while working your full-time job.

For most people, this is unsustainable. You burn out before you see a dollar.

2. It requires capital that most people don’t have

“Passive income” models require investment:

  • Course platforms ($100-$300/month)

  • Email marketing tools ($50-$200/month)

  • Website hosting and tools ($50-$100/month)

  • Ad spend ($500-$2,000/month to get traction)

You’re spending $700-$2,500/month before you make anything.

If you had that kind of capital to burn, you probably wouldn’t be looking for side income.

3. It assumes you have an audience already

Most passive income advice starts with: “First, build your audience.”

But building an audience takes years.

And during those years, you’re:

  • Creating content for free

  • Engaging with people for free

  • Providing value for free

Hoping that eventually, some percentage will buy something.

That’s not passive income. That’s speculative labor.

4. It ignores the 99% who fail

For every person making $50K/month from courses, there are 10,000 people who:

  • Spent money on courses

  • Built products nobody bought

  • Created content nobody engaged with

  • Gave up after 18 months of no results

Survivorship bias is extreme in the passive income world.

You only hear from the winners. The losers quietly disappear.

What Actually Doesn’t Work (The Breakdown)

Let me save you years and thousands of dollars by breaking down the most common “passive income” strategies:

Dropshipping

The pitch: Find products on AliExpress, list them on Shopify, run ads, and collect profit.

The reality:

  • Margins are 10-20% after ad costs

  • Customer service is a nightmare (shipping delays, quality issues, returns)

  • You’re competing with thousands of other dropshippers on the same products

  • Facebook/Google ad costs have skyrocketed (customer acquisition cost often exceeds profit)

Success rate: Less than 5% make any meaningful profit. Most lose money on ad spend.

Creating an online course

The pitch: Package your knowledge into a course, sell it while you sleep.

The reality:

  • Creating a quality course takes 100-200 hours

  • You need an audience willing to buy (most people don’t have this)

  • You need to market continuously (not passive)

  • Course completion rates are 3-7% (most buyers don’t finish, leading to refunds and reputation damage)

Success rate: Less than 1% of courses make more than $10,000 total revenue.

Affiliate marketing

The pitch: Recommend products, earn commissions, no inventory needed.

The reality:

  • You need massive traffic (10,000+ monthly visitors minimum)

  • Commissions are typically 3-10%

  • You’re building someone else’s business, not your own asset

  • Algorithm changes can kill your traffic overnight

Success rate: Top 1% of affiliates make 90% of the money. Everyone else makes $0-$500/month.

Real estate investing

The pitch: Buy rental properties, collect passive rental income.

The reality:

  • Requires $50,000-$100,000+ in capital for down payment

  • Property management is active work (or costs 8-12% of rent)

  • Maintenance, vacancies, and tenant issues are constant

  • Liquidity is zero (can’t access your capital quickly)

Success rate: Can work, but it’s not passive, and it’s not accessible to most people without significant capital.

Print-on-demand

The pitch: Design t-shirts, mugs, posters—sell with no inventory.

The reality:

  • Market is saturated (millions of designs)

  • Margins are $2-$5 per sale after platform fees

  • You need exceptional design skills or hire designers ($30-$100 per design)

  • Marketing costs eat profits

Success rate: Most sellers make $0-$200/month total.

The Truth About Income Models

Here’s what the passive income gurus won’t tell you:

There are actually three types of income models:

1. Linear Income (Time for Money)

How it works: You trade hours for dollars.

Examples:

  • Employment (salary)

  • Freelancing (hourly or project-based)

  • Consulting (selling your time)

Characteristics:

  • Immediate income (get paid for work done)

  • No leverage (you stop working, income stops)

  • The ceiling is determined by the hours available

Passive? No. Completely active.

Viable? Yes—especially as a starting point.

2. Leveraged Income (Create Once, Sell Repeatedly)

How it works: You create something once, then sell it many times.

Examples:

  • Software products (SaaS)

  • Information products (courses, books, templates)

  • Intellectual property (patents, royalties)

  • Systems and processes you’ve built

Characteristics:

  • High upfront effort (months to create)

  • Ongoing maintenance required (not truly passive)

  • Can scale without proportional time increase

Passive? Semi-passive. Requires marketing, updates, and support.

Viable? Yes, but only after you have an audience or distribution channel.

3. Compounding Income (Money Makes Money)

How it works: Capital generates returns without your active involvement.

Examples:

  • Stock market investments (index funds, dividends)

  • Real estate (if truly hands-off with property management)

  • Business ownership (if you’re not operating it)

Characteristics:

  • Requires significant capital upfront ($100,000+)

  • Returns are typically 7-10% annually

  • Truly passive once set up correctly

Passive? Yes—actually passive.

Viable? Only if you have capital to invest.

What Actually Works (And Why)

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

For most people starting from zero audience and limited capital, the path is:

Linear income → Leveraged income → Compounding income

Not: Passive income from day one.

Let me show you what this looks like in practice:

Phase 1: Linear Income (Months 1-6)

Goal: Generate your first $3,000-$5,000/month outside employment.

Method: Strategic consulting or productized services.

Why it works:

  • You get paid immediately for work done

  • No audience required (you sell to specific people with specific problems)

  • Low capital investment (just your time)

  • Validates that people will pay you

Example:

You’re a product manager. You identify a repeatable problem: “Companies struggle to build their first product roadmap.”

You package this as a service:

  • Offer: 4-week roadmap build

  • Price: $4,000

  • Delivery: 8 hours of your time (structured process you’ve done before)

  • Client acquisition: Direct outreach to 20 founders/CTOs in your network

Result: 1-2 clients/month = $4,000-$8,000/month in linear income.

This is not passive. But it’s real income. Fast.

Phase 2: Leveraged Income (Months 6-18)

Goal: Turn your repeatable service into a scalable product.

Method: Productize what you’ve been doing manually.

Why it works:

  • You’ve validated demand (people paid for the service)

  • You know exactly what works (you’ve done it 10+ times)

  • You can now create systems, templates, and processes

Example:

After doing 12 roadmap builds, you notice:

  • 80% of the work is in the same framework

  • You’ve created templates that work every time

  • Most clients need the same education

You create:

  • Self-serve product: Roadmap template + video walkthrough ($497)

  • Done-with-you program: Template + 3 coaching calls ($1,997)

  • Done-for-you service: Your original offer ($4,000)

Now you have three tiers:

  • Low-touch (leveraged): Sell template to 10 people/month = $4,970

  • Mid-touch (semi-leveraged): Sell program to 3 people/month = $5,991

  • High-touch (linear): Sell service to 1 person/month = $4,000

Total: $14,961/month with less time input than Phase 1.

This is semi-passive. You’ve built leverage.

Phase 3: Compounding Income (Months 18+)

Goal: Convert income into assets that generate returns.

Method: Invest leveraged income into compounding vehicles.

Why it works:

  • You now have excess capital from Phase 1-2

  • You can invest $3,000-$5,000/month

  • Compounding does the heavy lifting over time

Example:

You’re making $15,000/month from your productized consulting.

Your employment income covers your lifestyle ($8,000/month).

You invest $5,000/month into:

  • Index funds (S&P 500)

  • Real estate crowdfunding

  • High-yield savings for an emergency fund

After 5 years at 8% average return:

  • You’ve invested: $300,000

  • Your portfolio value: $366,000+

  • Your passive income from investments: $2,440/month (dividends + distributions)

This is actually passive. But it required Phases 1-2 first.

The Actual Framework (No Bullshit Version)

If you want to build income outside employment, here’s the honest path:

Step 1: Identify One Repeatable Problem You Can Solve

Not “what are you passionate about.”

What problem have you solved multiple times that people would pay to have solved?

Examples:

  • “I’ve helped 5 engineering teams adopt CI/CD pipelines.”

  • “I’ve built financial models for 3 startups seeking funding.”

  • “I’ve written go-to-market strategies for 4 B2B SaaS products”

This is your starting point.

Step 2: Package It As a Service (Not a Product)

Don’t build a course. Don’t create a SaaS product.

Sell your expertise as a service first.

Why:

  • You get paid immediately

  • You validate demand before building anything

  • You learn what people actually need (not what you think they need)

Offer structure:

  • Clear outcome (what they get)

  • Fixed timeline (4 weeks, 8 weeks, etc.)

  • Fixed price ($3,000-$5,000 range)

Step 3: Sell It To 10 People

Not 1,000 people. Not “build an audience.”

Find 10 people who have this problem and would be willing to pay to solve it.

How:

  • Direct outreach (email, LinkedIn, warm intros)

  • Existing network (people who know your work)

  • Referrals (ask clients to introduce you to others)

Goal: $30,000-$50,000 in revenue over 3-6 months.

This proves the model works.

Step 4: Productize What You’ve Done Manually

After you’ve delivered the service 10 times, you’ll notice:

  • The same steps repeat

  • The same questions come up

  • The same deliverables work

Now you can create:

  • Templates

  • Frameworks

  • Checklists

  • Processes

  • Video walkthroughs

Package these as a lower-touch offer ($500-$1,000).

Now you have leverage. You’re selling the same solution with less time input.

Step 5: Build Distribution (Not Audience)

You don’t need 10,000 followers.

You need 100 people who trust you and are willing to buy from you.

Build this through:

  • Client referrals

  • Strategic partnerships (people who serve the same audience)

  • Targeted content (not “grow my audience,” but “attract my ideal client”)

This is how you scale from $5,000/month to $15,000/month.

Why This Works When “Passive Income” Doesn’t

Let me contrast the two approaches:

The Passive Income Model:

  • Build audience first (12-18 months, no income)

  • Create product speculatively

  • Hope people buy

  • Requires a large audience (10,000+ followers)

  • High capital investment ($3,000-$5,000)

  • 12-18 months to first dollar

  • Success rate: Less than 5%

The Strategic Income Model:

  • Sell service first (income in week 1-4)

  • Validate through service delivery

  • Know people will buy (you’ve sold it already)

  • Requires a small network (100 people)

  • Low capital investment ($0-$500)

  • 2-4 weeks to first dollar

  • Success rate: 60%+ (if you have real expertise)

The strategic model works because:

  • You get paid while you learn

  • You validate before you scale

  • You build leverage after proving demand

  • You don’t need an audience to start

This is the path that actually works for people with full-time jobs, limited capital, and no existing audience.

What You Should Do This Week

Forget passive income.

Answer these questions:

1. What problem have you solved multiple times in your career?

Be specific. Not “I’m good at product management.” But “I’ve helped 3 companies define their ICP and build positioning.”

2. Who would pay $3,000-$5,000 to have that problem solved?

Not everyone. Specific people. Companies of a certain size, stage, or industry.

3. Can you deliver a solution in 4-8 weeks?

Not a 6-month engagement. A focused, time-bound project with a clear outcome.

If you can answer those three questions, you don’t need passive income.

You need to sell that service to 2 people this month.

That’s $6,000-$10,000.

From there, you’re not stuck in the passive income trap. You’re building real income.

Next Monday, we’re getting tactical. I’m giving you the exact consulting framework to build your first $5,000/month—without quitting your job, without building an audience, and without becoming a LinkedIn influencer.

See you next Monday.
